A recent statement was issued by the Egyptian army's official Facebook page allowing that military forces killed 6 individuals and arrested another. They also announced that they were able to destroy an underground warehouse where explosives were made along with several motorcycles and 4 tons of drugs.
The actions violate Article 6/1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which enshrines:
1. Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life.
HRM condemns the actions by the Egyptian army and its use of excessive force against civilians killed without evidence or justification in Sinai. It urges the relevant organizations to provide safety and security to the residents of Sinai.
Furthermore HRM calls on the Working Group on Death Penalty and Extra-Judicial, Summary or Arbitrary killings to form a fact finding committee to monitor the security situation in Egypt which has deteriorated. It also calls on the state to end the systematic violations practiced against innocent civilians and to review its stance on the random shootings, killings and destruction of homes in the region.
